Ajax smuggled Froylan Ledezma Stevens from under the nose of bitter rivals Feyenoord in 1997. As the 19-year-old arrived at Amsterdam airport, Ajax agents pounced and took him out a side door. The ruse backfired because, although Ajax signed him for £4.5m, they played him just twice before he returned to his native Costa Rica.

The attack was on Bettie Brewer – the female partner of male mascot Billy. The cartoon-type character, which was wearing the newly promoted League Two side’s team colours, suffered minor injuries during the attack. Stewards dashed on to the pitch to stop the attack and held the suspect.
